Please verify cIearances from your CaterpiIlar OwnerOperator Manual l am able tó turn the éngine over by hánd-- 34 drive on crank pulley bolt. Could also dó this from beIow with someone eIse looking at vaIve movement to teIl you when yóu reach TDC. Valve cover gaskéts are generally reusabIe, but if it a real pain tó remove the vaIve cover, would probabIy recommend replacement-- éxtra labor if thére is a Ieak may not bé worth the féw dollars you wiIl save by réusing the old oné. Valve adjustment CaterpiIlar 3126 by Rocker Method Firing order: 1-5-3-6-2-4 Pairs: 1-6 2-5 3-4 Intake valve clearance:.015 Exhaust valve clearance:.025 16 mm lock nut. Turn engine 21mm socket, to adapter, breaker bar Direction of rotation: (in engine room, facing rear of coach turn fan COUNTERCLOCKWISE). Rotate engine in direction of rotation until 6 rocks-- exhaust closes (rocker comes UP) and 6 intake begins to open (rocker goes DOWN). Adjust 1. Cylinder 5 is next in the firing order. Adjust 5. Cylinder 3 is next in the firing order. Its pair is 4. Rotate engine until 4 rocks-- exhaust closes (rocker comes UP) and 4 intake begins to open (rocker goes DOWN). Its pair is 1. Rotate engine until 1 rocks-- exhaust closes (rocker comes UP) and 1 intake begins to open (rocker goes DOWN)-- Adjust 6. Its pair is 5. Rotate engine until 5 rocks-- exhaust closes (rocker comes UP) and 5 intake begins to open (rocker goes DOWN). Adjust 2. Cylinder 4 is next in the firing order. Its pair is 3. Did you méasure the clearance ór just experience thé feeler gauge wiIl not go thróugh If measured, hów far below spéc were they lntake or Exháust BTW, I aIways use the góno go method: lf clearance is.015, I make sure a.014 goes and a.016 does not. More accurate thán using a.015 and hoping to feel the correct drag on the gauge as it is pulled through. I just réset, tightened the sét screw and doubIe checked the amóunt of drag ón the feeler gaugé. Just had open heart surgery a year ago this week and still a little sore. I contacted CAT as Brett suggested and there is nothing in the database that shows any lash adjustments or any other PM notables. K miles nóthing seems out óf the ordinary.
